The media was quite aflutter last week when Pres. Trump, commenting on ending the death and destruction in the Ukraine war said, “I wanna try and get to heaven if possible. I'm hearing I'm not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons."
With all due respects sir, no it won’t. Ending every war on earth would not get you one inch toward heaven. But the president did make one statement that shows he’s on the right track. He said, “I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole.” That kind of thinking is the first step to getting to heaven.
One good thing about his statement: It opened an enthusiastic online debate about how you get into the presence of God.
Elle Purnell in the Federalist told the president: “None of your own works, not even an act as virtuous as saving lives, can earn you a spot in paradise… Christ saved us not from mere physical death but from a spiritual one. It is this lifesaving work of His — and only His — that can deliver us into Heaven.” Good theology from a good publication.
Crisis, the Catholic magazine, offered him their way of salvation. The church is the vehicle: “This Church[the Roman Catholic Church] is not a mere human institution or voluntary association. It is the Bride of Christ and the Mystical Body of Christ, divinely instituted and guided by the Holy Spirit…while Trump’s efforts for peace are to be commended, they will not in themselves determine his eternal destiny. A good reminder for him, and for all of us, is to remain close to Jesus, to His Catholic Church, and to the sacraments that nourish us with grace.”
So Crisis offers the rituals of the Catholic church as the path to heaven.
Of all the publications, the New York Times suggested to Mr. Trump he had nothing to worry about. “Who, exactly, has been informing the president that he is ‘not doing well’ with regard to Kingdom come? Did Michael the Archangel somehow get Mr. Trump’s cellphone number?”
The Bible could not be clearer on the way to heaven. Ephesians 2:8,9: For by grace we have been saved through faith and that not of ourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, whereby we must be saved. There are a dozen other passages that say the exact same thing.
Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” The thief had not ended any wars; he had not done a single good deed that we know of. And he said that he was so bad he was deserving of crucifixion. He went to heaven anyway because of his faith in Jesus.
I am encouraged by Mr. Trump’s declaration that he is near the bottom of the totem pole. Even that’s an overstatement. He is at the bottom. So are the rest of us. We are all tied for last in the righteousness sweepstakes.
Do you want to go to heaven? Ask Jesus Christ to forgive you of your sins; receive Him into your heart; believe in His resurrection. According to the Bible that saves you. That and nothing else. So Mr. Trump, you may not be doing so well but there is great hope for you. Hope to see you in heaven.
