How to Be Born Again

 

How do you become a follower of Jesus? He tells you how Himself. Nicodemus was a well-educated religious leader. He visited Jesus at night—apparently unwilling to be seen with him openly. He asked a straightforward question about Jesus’ miraculous works: “How do you do these things?” Jesus tells him what he needs to hear: “You must be born again.” The phrase puzzles Nicodemus—how could anyone be born a second time? Can I reenter my mother’s womb? Jesus gently rebukes him, then explains: the Spirit is like the wind—unseen, unpredictable in origin and direction, yet its effects are evident. Being born again is like that: God’s Spirit enters and transforms your life.

Jesus then tells Nicodemus exactly what to do, offering what may be the Bible’s best-known verse: “God loved the world so much that He sent His Son to save it. Anyone who believes in the Son will not perish but have eternal life.” This simple message—open to anyone who believes—helped Christianity spread across the Roman world and become the most powerful force in history.

Jesus is speaking to you: believe in him. Ask him to save you, forgive you, and enter your life. As he said elsewhere, he stands at the door and knocks—if you invite him in, He will come in. Do this and you become God’s child, belonging to Christ, born again, a follower of Jesus—a Christian. It’s a step you can take right now.
