Why Does Israel Keep Winning?

Israel and the Providence of God

In the last couple of days Israel has attacked Iran on several fronts seeking to knock out the latter’s nuclear capability, as well as her long range missile capability and military leadership. Modern Israel came into being in 1948 and has fought several major wars in the last 75 years and has been under constant threat. Yet she keeps winning. Why?

From a commonsense standpoint she should not be; Israel is a tiny country; she has 9.5 million people; fewer than North Carolina. Her immediate and mostly hostile neighbors have more than 300 million.

Many nations are officially opposed to Israel and almost all opposed her early existence. Iran, with over 90 million people, is officially committed to genocide as are several other Middle eastern actors.

I remember reading a number of years ago of a travel invitation by a Saudi Arabia tourist bureau. It included the warning—no Jews may apply.

Modern Israel came into existence through the efforts of the Christian west with the Baptist, Harry Truman, playing a central role. They are an outpost of Western civilization so they are hated by the Left and, thus, much of the academic community. It’s one of the great ironies of history that the Progressives hate Israel because of her connection to Christian civilization.

Her history has grim moments but overall it is a triumph.

Israel is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. In his book, Knowledge and Power, George Gilder says Israel is one of the most powerful countries in software development.

That goes hand in hand, of course, with her powerful military which has used computer hacks to disable her enemies repeatedly, from Operation Stuxnet, which corrupted Iranian computers and set back her nuclear ambitions several years, to the most recent, Operation Grim Beepers that exploded pagers used by Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing and maiming many of Israel’s bitterest enemies.

The Israeli Defense Force is the envy of the world. Quite dependent on civilian reservists, it repeatedly destroys enemy forces, recently routing Hamas in Gaza.

Her intelligence apparatus, Mossad, is world-class. I remember reading an article many years ago in the LA Times. It asked the question, what do all the terrorists who kidnapped and killed Israeli athletes in the Munich Olympics have in common? They are all dead. Mossad hunted them down all over the world and liquidated them.

They are a nation with more resolve than any in the world. They have a commitment to preventing another holocaust; “never again” is their eternal rallying cry.

But I have saved the best for last. One time the great theologian, Karl Barth, was asked if he could prove the existence of God. He said, “Oh, that’s easy. I can prove the existence of God in a single word: Israel.” The ongoing existence of the Jews and now a Jewish homeland was proof enough for Barth that God existed and had a chosen people. I would add the astonishing success of the Jews in every area of human endeavor. Charles Murray’s brilliant essay, Jewish Genius, ends poignantly. After calling up many different  reasons for Jewish success, none of them adequate, he finally throws up his hands and says, “Maybe they are the chosen people after all.”

So the American Progressive Left can beat their brains in challenging Israel’s existence. They can shout “from the river to the sea” until they are hoarse. They can wear Hamas gear proudly, but it will not change the fact that they are fighting against God and are doomed to failure.

I believe the current state of Israel is a creation of Almighty God. Bible students disagree on whether or not modern Israel is the reconstitution of biblical Israel but there is no question that the current Jewish state is clearly under God’s protection for His own providential reasons.

When I was a little boy I remember my mother quoting to me the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis 12. She said, “Son, God has blessed America because we have blessed the Jews.” I think my Baptist mother had a profound insight. Praise God for Israel.
